Freelance photographer Andreas Mesli from Cologne has been documenting the numerous finds from various excavations in Tell el-Amarna since 2018 with special focus on the thousands of stone fragments from the Great Aten Temple.
In addition, he photographed a selection of local plants that have been cultivated throughout since the Amarna period as reference material for their ancient relatives as part of a funding project by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. This enables archaeobotanists to determine more precisely the botanical remains of the ancient city, some of which have only been preserved in very fragmentary form.
Furthermore, he took macrophotographs of a large number of feathers from postholes and a shallow pit near the offering stela in the rear area of the Great Aten Temple, which miraculously survived for almost 3400 years. These should benefit the future determination of the bird species that were endemic in ancient Akhetaten (and which were sacrificed in the temple).
